The following job descriptions are provided as examples of the park guide opportunities available with the National Park Service:

GS-05 Park Guide at Great Smoky Mountains:  This position is located in the Division of Resource Education.  The incumbent will provide first line information and orientation for visitor service activities in the daily operation of visitor centers.  Greet visitors, provide prepared orientation information, and directions, and answer questions.  Conduct pre-scripted "canned" programs on the nature trails and its resources.  Develop a variety of non-personal service materials, including interpretive displays and site bulletins; post information on bulletin boards; advise visitors of the National Park Service reservation service.  Give formal and informal talks about the mountains, history, the park or other topics at locations within the district or in the local community.

GS-04 Park Guide at Assateague Island National Seashore:  The incumbent of this position will operate the visitor center information desk in Maryland or Virginia on a general, day-to-day basis, providing information on park programs, facilities, and cultural and natural resources/history, both in person and on the telephone.  Also will provide information about nearby NPS areas and local services and points of interest outside the park.  Will assist cooperating association staff with sales. Will assist in the maintenance of the aquaria in the Visitor Centers.

GS-05 Park Guide at Grand Canyon:    Incumbent disseminates information and/or directs visitors regarding items of interest and programs available in the park, recreational campground availability, hiking information, distributes maps and brochures, informs visitors of potential safety hazards or closures, and provides directions and routes of travel through the park.  Incumbent will perform roves on the Rim Trail and at viewpoints with responsibility for providing a wide range of general park information and answering visitors' questions.  Incumbent will also conduct prepared, scheduled and impromptu programs to the public on various park themes.
