Applying for Park Ranger Jobs

Unfortunately, applying for park ranger jobs can be long and laborious.  Wading through the muck known as the federal hiring process ain’t for sissies.  So, here’s a couple tips from The Park Ranger Handbook to help you out.

· Read the vacancy announcement thoroughly — especially the part about “How to Apply”.  Most of the forms that may be required are listed below.  Submit everything they ask for.  Follow the instructions carefully.  If the vacancy announcement says to mail your application, don’t try to fax it or email it.

· If KSAs are requested, you MUST complete them.  Prepare a one-page narrative for each KSA (which stands for Knowledge, Skill or Ability).  Put the KSA at the top of the page and your name and the job announcement number at the bottom of each page.  Use numbers to quantify your experience.  Here’s an example of how numbers can improve your KSAs:

· BEFORE:  I conducted nature walks for visitors at Super Scenic State Park.

· AFTER:  I conducted 3-5 daily nature walks at Super Scenic State Park for groups of 20-25 visitors. Super Scenic State Park has annual visitation of 350,000+ and an annual operating budget of $2.2 million.
